Johnathan Thurston Academy: Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders, Today
Leadership is not about titles—it’s about mindset, resilience, and the ability to inspire change.
In Australia’s dynamic social landscape, young people are stepping up in ways never seen before. But
while passion is abundant, guidance and opportunity are often lacking. That’s where the Johnathan
Thurston Academy (JTA) comes in. Founded by one of Australia’s most admired sporting icons,
Johnathan Thurston, the academy is changing the way young Australians approach leadership,
personal development, and the future.
With a bold vision to develop confidence, courage, and self-belief, the Academy is not just building
leaders—it's igniting a national movement of inspired youth.
1. Why Youth Leadership Is Australia’s Priority
Australia’s youth face rising mental health issues, school disengagement, limited career exposure, and
increasing pressure to “figure it all out.” At the same time, they’re also filled with
potential—brimming with ideas, compassion, creativity, and ambition.
But leadership doesn’t develop by accident. It must be nurtured through mentorship, structure, and
lived experiences. The Johnathan Thurston Academy addresses this national need by providing a
safe, inclusive space for young people to grow, discover themselves, and lead with purpose.

2. The Johnathan Thurston Difference
Johnathan Thurston is more than a rugby league legend—he is a symbol of resilience, humility, and
cultural pride. His own journey from adversity to acclaim forms the heart of the Academy’s
philosophy.
What makes the Johnathan Thurston Academy different?
A Legacy with Purpose
Founded in 2018, JTA has grown into one of Australia’s leading youth development organisations.
Every program reflects Johnathan’s commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive
Australia—starting with our youth.
Real Mentorship, Real Impact
Each participant is supported by a team of skilled facilitators, mentors, and community leaders who
understand the real-world challenges young people face and help guide them toward success.
A Curriculum Beyond the Classroom
JTA programs go beyond academics. They focus on communication, emotional literacy, teamwork,
digital awareness, goal-setting, and mental wellbeing—filling the gaps formal education often misses.

3. Core Programs That Build Lifelong Skills
Each program under the JTPrograms banner is designed with a specific goal: to equip young
Australians with the confidence to lead and the tools to thrive.
JTBelieve – School Engagement Program
Focused on self-worth, courage, and community, this program works with young people and their
families to build strong foundations. Sessions cover goal setting, leadership, healthy relationships, and
positive mindset development.
JTLeadLikeAGirl
A dedicated leadership program for young women, JTLeadLikeAGirl empowers girls through
interactive workshops that explore self-belief, resilience, career readiness, and social influence. It
addresses real-world issues like online pressure, boundaries, and peer relationships.
JTYouGotThis – Early Intervention
Designed for vulnerable youth at risk of becoming entrenched in the justice system, this program
fosters emotional control, identity building, and prosocial engagement. Sessions include life skills
training, anger management, and community integration.
JTSucceed – Employment Readiness
An inclusive, youth-led employment program for regional and remote communities. Participants
develop resumes, undergo mock interviews, explore career pathways, and receive support
transitioning into real job opportunities.

4. Results That Speak for Themselves
Behind every program is a real transformation.
- Sienna, who once struggled with self-doubt, now mentors others after completing
JTLeadLikeAGirl. - Jayden, from Mount Isa, transitioned from low school attendance to securing a traineeship
after JTBelieve. - Aaliyah, who feared public speaking, now represents her region at youth forums after a
JTSucceed retreat.
And these are just a few of the 10,000+ stories made possible through JTA programs across Australia.

5. Data That Proves the Difference
Impact measurement is key to JTA’s model. Every program is assessed using feedback surveys,
behavioural indicators, and school/community inputs.
Here’s what the data shows:
- 93% of participants report increased self-confidence
- 87% feel better prepared to take initiative in school or work
- 76% develop stronger emotional regulation and social skills
- 82% demonstrate increased school engagement or attendance
These aren’t just numbers—they reflect lives being transformed and futures being reshaped.

6. Cultural Inclusion at the Heart of Every Program
JTA proudly embraces Australia’s rich Indigenous heritage. The Academy acknowledges and pays
respect to the Traditional Custodians of the land, working in close partnership with Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Elders and communities.
Programs include cultural learning, storytelling, and identity work—recognising that a strong
connection to culture strengthens leadership and resilience.
As Johnathan says:
“Don’t be scared of failing, be scared of not giving it a go.”
&nbps;
7. Partnerships That Scale Change
The Academy’s impact is amplified through collaboration. JTA works alongside:
- Government agencies
- Schools and universities
- Not-for-profit organisations
- Corporate supporters and brands
Partners such as Queensland Education, Sony Music, Accor, NBN, Worley, and Metro Mining
play a critical role in funding, visibility, and program delivery. These alliances allow JTA to expand
its footprint into more schools, communities, and regions every year.
